Distribution and Habitat
The zuban, also known as synagrid, is a species of sea ray-finned fish that inhabits the eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black Seas, and is endemic to Brazil.
It occurs at a depth of 36 to 200 m, with a water temperature range of 9.7 to 17.6 °C and a salinity level of 35.2.
Description
The zuban has an oval-shaped body, compressed from the sides, with a maximum length of approximately 1 meter (3.3 ft) and a weight of up to 14.3 kg (31.5 lbs). The head profile in adults is slightly convex, while in juveniles it is almost straight.
The dorsal fin features 11 spiny and 11-12 soft rays, with the spines capable of hiding in a depression on the back of the fish. The anal fin has 3 spiny and 7-9 soft rays. Fang teeth are arranged in several rows, with the front rows being more powerful than the rear rows.
The upper part of the first gill arch contains 9-10 gill rakers, while the lower part has 8-9 rakers. The lateral line is adorned with 62-68 scales. The back is grayish-blue in color, with silvery sides featuring bluish spots. The dorsal fin is bluish yellow, and the pectoral fin is reddish.
