ÖFB Frauen-Bundesliga

The ÖFB Frauen-Bundesliga (so the own spelling) is the highest game class in Austrian women's football. Organized women's football was held in Austria as early as 1936. A championship has been held since 1972. Since 2010, the ÖFB Frauen-Bundesliga has been played out with ten teams.
As part of the Bundesliga, each club plays in a round-trip against every other club. The champion of the ÖFB Women’s Bundesliga has been entitled to participate in the UEFA Women’s Champions League since 2001, the vice-champion for 2013/14 and from 2016/17 to 2019/20. The acting master is the SKN St. Pölten.

During a championship year, which is divided into a round and back, all ten clubs of the Bundesliga meet twice, once in their own stadium and once in the opponent’s stadium. A football season with 18 match days usually runs from August or September to May or June.
The team that takes first place at the end of the season is Austrian Champion and will take part in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for Austria. The vice-champion for 2013 and since 2016, entitled to participate in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The last-placed team must be relegated either to the 2nd league, either to the 2nd league Middle/West for the clubs of the federal states of Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol or Vorarlberg or to the 2nd league East/South for the clubs from Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Styria or Vienna.
In the case of a point tie, the better gate difference first decides on the order of placement, and in the case of the same difference then decides on the number of gates achieved. If this comparison still does not bring a decision, the following criteria are consulted: the total result of the games against each other, the number of goals scored in these games against each other, the number of goals scored abroad in direct comparison. After that, the scored away goals decide in all games. If these comparisons do not bring in anything, a decision game will be played on a neutral place. This has never been the case in the Bundesliga.

In the 1979/80 season, a 2nd performance level with the same name was introduced. From 1982, ÖFB took over the direction and continued to lead the two leagues. At the beginning of the 1990s, some federal state associations organized state championships for women's football.
