İskele District

The İskele District (Turkish: İskele İlçesi) is a district of the de facto state of Northern Cyprus, located in the northeastern part of the island.

Geography and Administration

The district is one of the six districts of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Its main town is İskele, which serves as the administrative center. The district has a total area of approximately 774 kilometers (578.552 acres). It includes the long peninsula of Karpas, which forms the Cape of St. Andreas (Zafer Burnu), and several small uninhabited islands.

History

The district was established in 1974 by the Turkish military after the Cyprus dispute. Since then, it has been under the de facto control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The territory of the present district still belongs to the Republic of Cyprus and its district Famagusta, but the latter has no control over this area.
